"Talent wins games, but teamwork and intelligence win championships." -Michael Jordan
In sports, the most successful team franchises are those with shared goals for success, and with good communication between all parties driving the process.
The same can be said for health and safety in the workplace.
In Ontario, the Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC) is a team environment where all levels of an organization come together to support health and safety excellence. Having a functioning JHSC ensures a safer workplace for everyone, while sending a strong message that the safety and well-being of the workforce are valued by the employer.
Recently, the Ministry of Labour announced that workers in Ontario can now complete JHSC Certification Training Part 1 solely through eLearning in addition to the options of classroom, blended and distance learning programs.
Here, we’ll review these options and discuss how to decide which is right for you or your workplace.
Do I Need JHSC Certification Training?
Ontario workplaces with 20 or more employees are legally required to have a Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC) which is the basis for a strong health and safety workplace culture. The JHSC plays an important part in workplace health and safety through the identification of hazards and recommendations on how to control them.
The Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) requires that at least 1 worker member and 1 management member be certified. JHSC certification training helps members to better understand the Act, workplace roles and responsibilities and the importance of a JHSC; to become champions of health and safety in the workplace.
JHSC Training Options: Classroom, Blended and eLearning
JHSC Certification training requires a member to take from an approved training provider Parts 1 & 2 of mandatory training, which may involve up to 5 days in a classroom. The employer must cover the costs for the training, travel expenses as well as any disruption to business.
Currently, PSHSA provides JHSC Certification Part 1 training through a number of channels including:
- Classroom JHSC Training Program (delivered over the course of 3 days)
- Blended JHSC Training Program (2 days in class and 6.5 hours of eLearning)
Our 3-day, in-class JHSC Certification Part 1 program provides hands-on instruction for workers and supervisors from all sectors. The classroom program is may be delivered in a variety of venues, including the PSHSA, conference centres and public spaces. Employers can also arrange to have JHSC training be delivered onsite in the workplace.
When training takes place offsite, the employer is responsible for employees’ travel and accommodation expenses.
