New JHSC Certification Standard Released, eLearning Options Coming Soon

In 2019, the Ontario Ministry of Labour, Training and Skills Development (MLTSD) announced that changes would be made to the JHSC Certification Training Program and Provider Standards, as well as the training and other requirements set out by the Chief Prevention Officer.

We are pleased to share that these changes will now be coming into effect on May 1st, 2020. These changes include:

  • Allowing Part One training to be taken entirely online.
  • Extending the timeline for JHSC members who complete Part One training to give them 12 months to complete their Part Two training.
  • Removing the need for JHSC members to apply for extensions or complete Refresher after Part One to give them an additional 6 months.

Today, the Ministry shared with PSHSA and fellow providers the JHSC Training Program Standard, JHSC Training Provider Standard, revised eLearning Instructional design guidelines and revised JHSC provider application guidelines. As of May 1st, 2020 these standards will replace the existing standards that came into force on March 1st, 2016.

Providers are able to submit applications to be approved to deliver JHSC Certification Part One via eLearning as of May 1st.

“We’re very glad that the new standard has been released,” says Glenn Cullen, CEO and COO of Public Services Health & Safety Association. “This is an exciting development as it provides our clients with additional options and channels for accessing the training and certification they need, especially in this pandemic environment.”

PSHSA will be submitting its application and Certification Part One eLearning program to the Ministry for review and approval on May 1st. We look forward to delivering Part One training virtually across the province in the coming weeks.
